West Plaza & Chung King Road

920-970 Chung King Road, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Audio: Al Soo-Hoo share his childhood memories of the West Plaza.

The West Plaza and Chungking Road, completed in 1948, provided space for Chinatown’s growing population.  Buildings had living quarters on the second floor and stores on the first.

As families moved and business owners retired, the neighborhood transformed; artists and architects, mostly non-Chinese, purchased or leased some spaces for studios, galleries, and living.  The galleries’ regular openings of contemporary art shows gave Chungking Road an international reputation as an art destination.
